Brief historical information about the department: In 1947, the Karakalpak Integrated Scientific Research Institute was established. In 1959, the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR was established. A folklore section has begun operating within the branch. This sector was headed by K. Maksetov. Starting in 1959, the department conducted a series of works on the study of oral folk art. Its results are of great importance in the development of Karakalpak folkloristics. From 1959 to the present, the department’s scientific staff have organized folklore expeditions within the republic and abroad, during which they collected a number of examples of oral folk art, works, and other interesting materials. These materials constitute the main part of the manuscript fund of the fundamental library of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences. All samples of Karakalpak folklore published in our republic were prepared for publication based on materials collected by the staff of the Karakalpak Folklore Department. Between 1977 and 1981, thanks to the active participation of the staff of the Karakalpak Folklore Department, 20 volumes of Karakalpak folklore samples were published. Between 2007 and 2025, 106 volumes of the multi-volume edition “Karakalpak Folklore” were published, and this work continues.

The sector (later the department) of Karakalpak folklore paid special attention to training qualified specialists. Scientists such as N. Daukarayev, K. Aimbetov, I. Sagitov, K. Maksetov, N. Zhapakov, A. Karimov, A. Alimov, K. Mambetnazarov, M. Nizamatdinov, N. Kamalov, S. Bakhadyrova, and J.
