The history of the science of bioecology in the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan begins in the 40s of the 20th century when the first ecological and biological studies were conducted at the Karakalpak Institute of Economics and Culture by the Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor S.O. Osmanov.
The first biological unit, called the fishery sector, was created in 1957 as part of the Complex Research Institute, renamed from the Institute of Economics and Culture of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. This sector began work on the problem of conservation and reproduction of fish stocks in the Karakalpak ASSR under the leadership of S.O. Osmanov, Candidate of General Biological Sciences, later Doctor of Biological Sciences (1969), Honored Scientist of Uzbekistan (1964), and Honored Scientist of Karakalpakstan (1978).
The establishment of the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan (1959) created additional opportunities for the development of biological science in Karakalpakstan. At that time, new departments in the field of biology were opened under the Presidium of the branch, and many local personnel were sent to scientific centers for postgraduate studies. In 1995, the botanical sector was established. The microbiology and terrestrial animal laboratories were opened in 1961.
In 1966, all biological laboratories became part of the newly created Complex Institute of Natural Sciences (KISN) under the branch. In 1990, when it was necessary to make scientifically based coordinating decisions to save the region and its population from the consequences of the drying up of the Aral Sea on a Union scale, the Aral Scientific-Research Coordination Center (SRICC) was created, and its Nukus branch was created in the city of Nukus. Many biology specialists from TFKI were invited to work there. In 1992, this center was transformed into the Department of Environmental Problems of the Aral Sea Region under the Karakalpak Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In 1994, the Institute of Bioecology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan was established.
In 2012, the Karakalpak Research Institute of Natural Sciences was opened in the system of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the basis of the Institute of Biology and the Complex Institute of Natural Sciences.
The Laboratory of Ecology of the Animal World consists of the following structural subdivisions:
- Fish ecology group;
- Entomology, ornithology, teryology group.
Fish ecology group
The main scientific direction of the fish ecology group is the study of the biodiversity of fish populations of the Aral-Amudarya basin; species and structural diversity of ichthyocenoses and their potential for regeneration; morpho-ecological features of fish and productivity characteristics of background species; The goal of the research is the preservation of the biodiversity of the fish population of the Aral Sea basin, the sustainable use of its resources, and the development of scientific foundations for the development of fish farming in the region.
The main scientific direction of the animal ecology group of the entomology ornitology teriology group is the study and monitoring of the dynamics of the mammal fauna in the conditions of the Southern Aral Sea region, the study of the ecological foundations of the regional use of populations of economically useful animals, the regulation of the number of harmful animals, the determination of the ecological characteristics of animal populations and individual species in different biogeocenoses, the development of recommendations for the conservation of the biological diversity of the animal world in the conditions of the Aral Sea ecological crisis, the organization of reserves and protected areas.
Entomology group
The main direction of the entomology group is to determine the entomofauna of various natural biocenoses of the Aral Sea region, its role and economic significance, and to study the ecological and biological characteristics of insects in the conditions of the Southern Aral Sea region.
Ornitology Group
The main direction of the ornithological group is the study of the biology, ecology, and population of spring and autumn migratory, wintering, and settled bird species, as well as nesting species. Based on the obtained results, ways to restore and preserve the integrity of the biodiversity of avifauna and improve the ecological conditions of the Aral Sea region are proposed.
Theriology group
The main scientific direction of the group is the study and monitoring of the dynamics of the mammal fauna in the conditions of the Southern Aral Sea region, the identification of the ecological characteristics of individual species, the development of recommendations for the conservation of the biodiversity of the animal world in the conditions of the Aral Sea ecological crisis, the organization of reserves and protected areas.
Currently, the laboratory is implementing fundamental projects "Systematic study of the dynamics of faunistic complexes in the conditions of the Southern Aral Sea region" and "Research on the transformation of the kwl echistofauna and the development of aquaculture in the conditions of a changing hydrological regime in the territory of the Southern Aral Sea region" (2025-2029).
