In 1959, the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan was established on the basis of the Karakalpak Integrated Research Institute. The opening of a branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Nukus made it possible to coordinate fundamental scientific research in the Republic. The topics of scientific papers covered almost the entire range of sectors of the national economy. Academic publications on the history of Karakalpakstan, the Karakalpak language and literature were published, and a 20-volume collection of Karakalpak Folklore was published. The Institute of History, Language and Literature has begun work on the collection and introduction into scientific circulation of written monuments, which are an invaluable spiritual value of the people.
In 1991, the Karakalpak branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan received the status of the Karakalpak branch. Over the years of independence, the department has risen to new levels of its development. The department has organized new institutes and divisions: the Institute of Language and Literature named after N. Davkarayeva, the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography, the Institute of Socio-Economic Problems of the Aral Sea Region, the Integrated Institute of Natural Sciences, the Institute of Bioecology, as well as the Botanical Garden, the Ustyurt Desert Station, the Muynak International Biostation, the fundamental Library, the editorial office of the Bulletin of the University of ANRUz and, since 1994, the Specialized Council for the Defense of Candidate theses on Historical sciences.
Since independence, one of the most important conditions for the formation of a democratic state and a civil society with a market economy has been defined as ensuring the further development of the country's scientific and technical potential through consistent, step-by-step improvement of the organization of research activities. An important step in this direction was the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated February 20, 2012 "On improving the organization of scientific and research activities", which identified and approved priority areas of scientific and technical development for the future and a list of names of state programs. Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 33 dated February 7, 2012 "On measures to further optimize the structure and improve the activities of scientific institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan", aimed at improving the efficiency of research institutes in accordance with modern requirements, developing and strengthening the scientific potential of higher education institutions, strengthening the integration of science and production, involves solving organizational and structural issues of subordinate institutions of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, creating conditions for young people, capable scientists of the republic to participate in solving the most important fundamental and applied programs, in developing priority areas for the development of science for the benefit of the country. When optimizing the structure of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, it was decided to transform it by combining or partially liquidating research institutions.
According to the resolution, it is proposed to reorganize the scientific departments of the Karakalpak Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan: 1) on the basis of the Integrated Institute of Natural Sciences, the Institute of Bioecology and the Institute of Socio-Economic Problems of the Aral Sea Region of the Karakalpak Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the creation of the Karakalpak Scientific Research Institute of Natural Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan; 2) on the basis of the Institute of Language and Literature named after N.Davkaraev and the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the KKO Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the formation of the Karakalpak Scientific Research Institute of Humanities of the KKO Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. At the same time, according to paragraph 2 of this resolution, scientific institutions and centers newly created as a result of the reorganization must have the status of a legal entity with all banking and other details.
Since May 1, 2012 The Presidium of the Karakalpak Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan approved the structures of the new institutes:
